As a longtime Dead by Daylight player, I have spent the 2026 season cycling through Killers, and the Demogorgon remains one of my favorite monsters to control. The Stranger Things chapter has returned to the game after its licensing removal, so Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, and the Hawkins Laboratory map are no longer lost to vaults and store delistings. That means new players can finally learn the Demogorgon, the first non-human Killer in Dead by Daylight, and its teleporting, Survivor-slashing nightmare. It crosses into the Upside Down, an alternate plane of reality, then re-emerges to drag victims into its gaping toothy maw. Here is how I play it in 2026.

1. Start Thinking With Portals

The Demogorgon's gimmick is all about using its ability to teleport across the map. To make the most of it, I always tell myself to think with portals. Instead of Chell, I am a 10-foot-tall monster with claws and a giant gaping mouth for a face. I can spawn six portals at a time, and this can be bumped up to eight with Perks. Survivors can dismantle them, but it takes 12 seconds, which is enough time for me to show up and discourage them. There is also a two-second stealth buff when exiting, which helps with surprise attacks if timed right. Pressing and holding the portal button also shows how many Survivors are crowded near them. They have spacing limits, but there seems to be none when Generators are involved, so I stick them right next to Generators, which I always should do.

2. Save Shred for Closing the Gap

The Shred attack is my main offensive ability aside from the basic melee, and mastering it should be every Demogorgon player's goal. It takes one second to charge and two seconds to cool down without Perks, so it can be popped fairly frequently. But on hit, it increases the cooldown to three seconds, so I try not to go too ape with it. It is perfect for short, narrow spaces where there is no room to get out of the way. I avoid using it in open areas because its long telegraph and inability to guide the lunge make it easy for Survivors to dodge.

3. Keep an Eye on Your Portals

While other Killers encourage an aggressive playstyle, the Demogorgon is best used more passively. I scatter portals around key points on the map, then monitor each one for ambush attacks like a spider waiting for a fly to land in its web. Since portals notify me when a Survivor starts to break one apart, I can instantly teleport to where they are and attack them in retaliation. Used right, it is pretty funny to watch other players panic as I suddenly appear in front of them before watching them scatter like mice from a cat.

4. Surge Is Beneficial to the Demogorgon

Mentioning Surge in the Dead by Daylight community usually gets me in hot water, as there are many better Perks that do the same kind of job, like Pop Goes the Weasel. But in the hands of the Demogorgon, Surge is surprisingly useful. Surge plays hard into Demogorgon's map-lockdown metagame, and it can be useful for constantly knee-capping Survivor progress in a hard war of attrition. To lean further into map lockdown, I combine it with Mindbreaker, which slows Survivor movement speed on Generators under 50 percent repaired, and Surveillance, which highlights them when they are damaged.

5. Experiment With Add-Ons and Perks

The best way to make a favorite Killer stronger is to use Perks and add-ons. Although there are many to choose from, there are a few for the Demogorgon that I definitely bring to the next round if I want to be unstoppable. Mew's Guts is a great add-on because it increases the number of available portals and reduces the cooldown of missed Shred attacks. Combine it with Upside Down Resin to make portals harder to destroy, and I have a core stat bump I do not want to be without. If I like using a stealth-heavy Killer, I bring Red Moss, which increases stealth after portal re-emergence. Combine it with Leprose Lichen, which reveals injured Survivors when I exit a portal, and Deer Lung for a movement speed boost, and I become a sneaky, super-fast inter-dimensional ninja.

6. Focus on Map Traversal and Survivor Slowdown

The Demogorgon's playstyle is all about hit-and-run tactics. Its inability to manage extended chases and continued damage while harrying someone is its biggest weak point. So if I lose someone, I stop and give up. To counter Survivors sprinting away all the time, I focus on an even spread of portals around key points where players might cluster, such as exit gates, Generators, and hooks. Bringing add-ons that inflict debuffs such as Blindness or Tired is also recommended, as anything I can use to make their escape from my grasp more difficult is always beneficial to this monster.

7. Use the Active Portal Glow to Set a Trap

If I want to be really creative and devious as the Demogorgon, I take advantage of a simple portal mechanic. Whenever the Demogorgon goes through a rift, it glows and shows anyone looking at it that this is the current active portal, meaning it is the only one that can be destroyed since inactive ones cannot be, and the monster could suddenly appear through it again. The clever part is that I can use this to set a trap. I set down two portals, ideally near a Generator or hook where another Survivor is trapped as extra bait. I place the first portal on or near something important, then put another one just out of view before traveling through the first one again. This tricks Survivors into thinking the first one is the important one, so they waste time destroying it. Since portals let me know when someone is near them, I hang around by the second one and wait to ambush the distracted players. It is a simple move that people regularly fall for.

8. Do Not Fall for the Loop

Since one of the main defense tactics of Survivors in Dead by Daylight is to try to pull a Killer into a loop in a particular section of the map, Demogorgon players should avoid this at all costs. It is something that many people keep falling back on, and if I want to make the most of this monster, I avoid prolonged chases. This big screeching lummox is incredibly slow, potentially the slowest Killer in Dead by Daylight, and a lot of time can be wasted running around after someone while waving its big gangly arms. That wasted time lets other Survivors repair Generators, destroy totems, and escape. So the second I see someone start to loop, I do whatever I can to cut them off or steer them into somewhere I can lock them down.

9. Play Mind Games

As the Demogorgon, it is worth trying to play into the Survivors' fears, because panicky players are more prone to pitfalls and mistakes. One method I recommend to freak out fleeing victims is to bait a Shred attack. The telegraph for Shred involves the Demogorgon raising its arms, which signals to anyone on the receiving end that it is time to get out of the way. But I can cancel it and then swing a claw attack, letting me get in a cheap hit on a target and causing them to second-guess me even more. It is a devious little move, and if I combine it with add-ons that patch up its movement speed limitations, I have a good weapon for psychological warfare.

10. Use Height to Your Advantage

There are a few maps in Dead by Daylight that offer nice verticality, and as a Demogorgon, I definitely want to be up high, surveying the landscape. Sticking a portal somewhere high means I have a handy platform to teleport back to, allowing me a better view over the whole map, like on top of the Saloon in the Dead Dog Saloon map. Using Shred from this height is also fun because it can carry me a lot further than its base 11 meters thanks to the height advantage, so I can launch myself into far areas of the map in seconds. Although this does not count as an attack since both the Killer and Survivors are registered on two separate planes, a giant monster with teeth for its face suddenly plopping down next to someone is still a terrifying tactic.

In 2026, the Demogorgon is still a monster that rewards patience, map awareness, and psychological pressure. I do not try to be the fastest Killer in Dead by Daylight. Instead, I think with portals, save Shred for narrow gaps, set traps with active portal glows, and punish Survivors who waste time looping me. With the Stranger Things chapter back in rotation, there has never been a better time to embrace the Upside Down and turn this shambling stalker into a murderous monstrosity.
