The Lich Arrives: Vecna's Crossover in Dead by Daylight and the Missing Stranger Things Connection
Dead by Daylight and Stranger Things collide as Vecna, the iconic Dungeons & Dragons lich, joins the game's chilling anniversary event.
The haunting mists of the Entity's realm have parted for a new, ancient evil. Vecna, the infamous lich whose name has struck terror into the hearts of tabletop adventurers for decades, has now breached the Fog to become the latest killer in Dead by Daylight. This monumental addition arrives as part of the game's eighth anniversary festivities, bringing not only the dreaded archlich himself but also two original survivors inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons universe and a perilous, dungeon-themed map. While this crossover fulfills a long-held dream for the developers, it also highlights a curious narrative disconnect. Two familiar faces from the town of Hawkins, Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler, have already faced a monstrous entity they dubbed 'Vecna' in their own world. Yet, within the Entity's domain, no special recognition or unique dialogue will pass between these survivors and the iconic undead spellcaster now hunting them.

The protagonists of the celebrated Netflix series Stranger Things have a well-established tradition of naming their otherworldly adversaries after creatures from their beloved Dungeons & Dragons game. This pattern began with the Demogorgon in the first season, evolved with the introduction of the Mind Flayer, and reached its zenith when the most formidable denizen of the Upside Down was christened 'Vecna' in the show's fourth season. This television iteration shares profound similarities with his tabletop namesake: a mortal origin twisted by dark power, formidable psychic and supernatural abilities, and a gaunt, skeletal visage. It was a fitting, albeit terrifying, moniker for the teens of Hawkins to choose.

However, as players may discover, the Dungeons & Dragons version of Vecna is not known to have a particular vulnerability to the Kate Bush anthem "Running Up That Hill." More intriguingly, the survivors from the Stranger Things universe who now find themselves in the Entity's game will apparently not draw any connection between the two similarly named horrors. Perhaps, in the frantic struggle for survival, Steve and Nancy will be too preoccupied with evading this new threat's sinister powers to ponder the eerie coincidence.
This scenario is made possible by the return of the Stranger Things chapter to Dead by Daylight. Initially introduced in 2019, the collaboration—which brought Steve, Nancy, the Demogorgon killer, and the Hawkins National Laboratory map—was unexpectedly removed in 2021, leading to widespread speculation about licensing issues with Netflix. To the delight of fans, the entire chapter made a triumphant return in November 2023 and remains a permanent part of the game's roster.

The potential for a unique, meta-narrative encounter between the Hawkins survivors and the D&D lich was a point of curiosity. During a recent press conference, Behavior Interactive's senior creative director, Dave Richard, was directly questioned on whether players could expect any special interactions if Steve or Nancy found themselves facing Vecna. In contrast to the typically guarded responses regarding future content, Richard's answer was unequivocal: "That'd be cool, but no." This confirmation establishes that, for the time being, the two Vecnas exist as separate entities within the game's lore, with no acknowledgment of their shared name across dimensions.

This absence, however, does not permanently seal the door on such possibilities. Both Dave Richard and Head of Partnerships Mathieu Côté have expressed immense enthusiasm for the Dungeons & Dragons collaboration, describing it as a passion project years in the making. Their vision for the future is expansive. The team has a strong desire to incorporate more content from the rich tapestry of D&D into Dead by Daylight's ever-growing anthology of horror. Richard specifically noted his personal interest in exploring the gothic, vampire-infested realms of the Ravenloft setting, a domain perfectly suited to the game's atmosphere.
Furthermore, the collaborative spirit extends beyond digital realms. While not currently in active development, the team has openly discussed the tantalizing prospect of a Dungeons & Dragons tabletop module or one-shot adventure set within the Entity's domain. "It's not impossible," Côté remarked, highlighting the strong relationship forged with Wizards of the Coast. This idea resonates with the current cultural moment, where video games like the award-winning Baldur's Gate 3 have fueled a massive resurgence in the popularity of role-playing games among a broader audience.
For now, players can certainly craft their own unofficial Stranger Things Season 4.5 narratives by having the lich Vecna relentlessly pursue Nancy and Steve through the twisted landscapes of the Fog. The tools for a terrifying chase are all there. Yet, within the official canon of these crossovers, that chase will lack a specific, self-aware spark—a knowing glance, a line of panicked dialogue, or an Easter egg that winks at their shared history with a different kind of Vecna. The Entity, it seems, is content to let that particular mystery linger in the Fog, even as it welcomes one of fantasy's greatest villains to its deadly game.
